Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma launched Vidya Rath-School on Wheels, a project aimed at imparting elementary education to economically challenged children of the society.
The project was launched at a function held at the premises of Gauhati High Court here on Monday in the presence of Chief Justice RM Chhaya.
Speaking on the occasion, the Assam CM said the project will be helpful in empowering economically challenged children academically.
Taking to the micro-blogging site Twitter, Sarma extended his gratitude to Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court RM Chhaya for implementing the project in Assam.
''Delighted to attend the launch of Vidya Rath, a project aimed at imparting elementary education to EWS students.
Gratitude to Hon Chief Justice of Gauhati HC Shri RM Chhaya for implementing the project in Assam. We shall extend full support to Gauhati HC for making it a success,'' he tweeted.
Notably, the project Vidya Rath- School on Wheels envisaged providing access to underprivileged children to elementary education for 10 months. After 10 months, the children will be integrated into the conventional system of education.
Students will be offered free mid-day meals, uniforms, and textbooks under the said project.
''We are celebrating 75 years of our Independence and there cannot have been a more auspicious occasion for launching this project. I hope that this project will be really helpful in bringing our children who hitherto remain outside the ambit of formal education,'' he added.
He further asserted that the India of our dreams cannot be achieved without uplifting the socio-economically disadvantaged sections, adding, ''Our children are the future of the nation and it is extremely painful to see them begging in the streets instead of going to schools, framing the foundations for a bright future.
''It is equally disheartening to see many of them drop out of schools due to their families' financial condition and wandering around, getting used to substance abuse," he said.
